Our Mission
Our students come to lessons excited and most importantly, curious.
Unidos Por El Idioma was created to teach English to students who wouldn’t otherwise have access to English teachers. With the resources available online, you can teach yourself English. However, it is very hard to become proficient if there isn’t an English speaker helping to translate and connect things back to your native language. Many resources online exist to teach English, but they don’t have the translations back to other languages, so students can’t understand what they’re seeing unless they have a teacher next to them. Unidos Por El Idioma provides a platform for students who specifically speak Spanish to learn English.
Beyond just teaching English, we want our students to understand their surroundings. Our teachers are all native speakers, and we are all young, so we can provide examples of modern-day English in our classes, helping ours students to understand what’s going on in the latest song or movie. We know what English is useful in the current day, and we can help students understand the nuances of the language, such as the different between “Yes”, “Yeah”, and “Yup”. That, is something that is difficult to pick up on your own. These nuances keep our students curious and asking questions.
We want our students to benefit, of course. But our teachers do too.
Unidos Por El Idioma offers an opportunity those who speak both English and Spanish/Portuguese to practice their teaching skills and second language in a unique situation. It allows for cultural exchanges, as we learn about the traditions of the places we teach English. Our teachers are students, both literally as they attend school, and while they teach, as they learn about new cultures and practice their second language. I, Enzo, have been corrected several times on my pronunciation of words, and each time, I take it with a laugh and fist-pump, knowing I just got better at Spanish.
We want to expand.
Unidos Por El Idioma currently has 200 students, but who says we can’t have more? The English language can be useful for anyone, and to truly make an impact, we want our lessons to reach as many people as possible. As noted on the home page, learning English can provide economic opportunities, and knowing we have the ability to help others even though we’re young, motivates us to reach as many people as we can.
